Personality Enhancement

Our personality goes beyond our physical appearance as our appearance does not define who we are although that serves as the first point of recognition and I tell you, any how we look am, person wey fine fine. It’s however our personality that is our real self. That’s who we should nurture…pay attention for when all seems out of control, that’s what keeps us connected with people, our world and our Maker.

I recall the period my dad was in hospital after being bedridden for quite a while. He had withdrawn into himself, hardly speaks with us or participate in our activities… Every once in a long while, he will smile and call out to us; immediately everywhere lights up and I’d say “That’s my own father!” And I received an instruction “Your father is not the body you see lying down there. Your father is within that body. That’s why no matter how ill health dealt on the outside, there is the connection that transcends the physical. One day later I got called that he has gone to be with the Lord. I got to the hospital and went to see him…lying there motionless. Then the hospital attendants lifted “him” and dropped on the floor. I was indignant! “How dare you drop my father on the ground that way?” I asked. They stopped and looked at each other. A voice said to me “That’s not your father. It’s a lifeless body. Your father has left” I stepped back and allowed them to continue what they were doing. Therefrom, I understood that it’s not about the body; the carcass but the spirit- our inner being that counts. That understanding has stayed with me…

“What’s it about this story?” You may be wondering. I have been 💭💭wondering about the much attention we pay to our outward appearance and hoping we pay more attention to our inside…the real us. Often you see well dressed individuals and when they open their mouth to speak, you are repulsed, not due to poor breathe or bad grammar but their mannerism, which to me is a product of their content, stinks.

We need to pay closer attention to our inner self…the totality of our thoughts, emotions, preferences and choices that translates into our personality. Don’t get me wrong, we should take care of our physical appearance, but that is not the ultimate.

While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
‭‭II Corinthians‬ ‭4:18‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Our physical condition is temporary and changes and may decay but the inner us (which we cannot see) is the breathe of God in us, that gives us life and how we nurture it defines us.

Of our own we can’t do much but God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which gains prominence when we accept Jesus as Lord & Savior, would help and strengthen our inner self and make us acceptable to God and men that matter.

But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control. There is no law against such things as these.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:22-23‬ ‭GNB‬‬

  • Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new.
