2023 General Elections-The Issues
The National Elections are around the corner! I’m a bit nostalgic.
I would own up that I’m not particularly a fan of any of the current presidential candidates. However I believe that God will crown whoever He has in mind. Hmmmm…I used to think so, but I know better now. God will work through us to accomplish His plan.
I also rest in the truth that God’s thoughts towards us are always of good even if we are not able to comprehend it. So as the day draws near, we continue to pray and watch. Our watch could also be referred to active participation in the process.
Now considering the state of our country Nigeria, I believe we need a President that can put his feet down and insist that things be done in defined ways that would get us to a better place.
As I write, it’s Presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu that stands out as the most appropriate for the following reasons
- When he was governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007, the then President Olusegun Obasanjo stopped their subvention. Lagos State under his leadership was able to look inwards and grow the economy of the State.
- Tinubu has put in place or fine tuned the blueprint for Lagos State which subsequent leaders have simply complied with.
- During the primaries when it looked like his party was not going to give him the ticket he stood his ground and spoke out.
However, Presidential candidate of the Labour Party Peter Obi was reluctant to pick the nomination form on the platform of his then Party- PDP except if the presidency would be zoned to where would favor his aspiration. Thereafter when he realized PDP may not give him the ticket he decamped to another party that was willing. These sequence of actions of Peter Obi were very bad signs for me. It appears Peter lacks the basic trait of a good leader that would stand in place and true to his convictions and weather whatever storm comes.
Atiku Abubakar of the PDP is not on the radar for me.
A lot of things are hazy and many people are being emotional and sentimental; I am aware that where we are now requires a lot of deep, strategic and dispassionate thinking.
We don’t need a bandwagon for the journey we are on and so we need to reduce the noise so we could hear each other and address what matters.
And as the days unfold my prayer remains that in all of these, Nigeria wins.
So help us Lord.
