Change Phenomenon

Let us talk briefly about the Change Phenomenon.

Ever wondered why we fear change? It is a question that keeps reoccurring in my thoughts. I have come to accept the truth that change, whether we accept it or not is inevitable

Why we fear change…uncertainty of possible outcome? mistrust of the change agents? failure of past attempts to influence change? It is often said that the devil you know is better than the angel you are yet to meet or a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Hmmm. No devil can be better than an angel, whether imagined or real. I wouldn’t advise you drop the bird you have in pursuit of others you know nothing about, but with the bird in hand and proper strategy, more birds could accrue to you.

It is not change itself that is the challenge but the fear we have of it. In a society where trust appears relatively scarce, we can understand and appreciate this fear, but changes have happened successfully. We experience changes daily whether deliberately or as a function of the passage of time and change occurs in our personal life as well as business life.

We resist change instinctively. The resistance to change in the public sector is phenomenal but change can and does happen positively in that sector too. While in the sector, we were able to create a brand by first believing in ourselves and our capacity…convince ourselves that public and private sectors in the country are driven by the same breed of persons. The determinant of the output derives from the commitment which we put into it.

We also fear change in our personal life. Perhaps that is why the rate of abuse in relationships (physical and emotional) is taking on an alarming dimension.

The grace of God has been made available to each and everyone of us to pursue and bring about the change in our life and neighbourhood that we desire. I also know that there are a lot of people driving change positively in their areas of influence as we speak.

Let’s give change a chance. Let us embrace the Change Phenomenon. We cannot have the desired change in society and our lives if we do not overcome the fear of change.

And remember If you don’t like how things are, change it! You’re not a tree…Jim Rohn
