Sex for Marks: My Experience
Sex for Marks has taken the center stage on most social media platforms. It’s not a new phenomenon. All we see now are the manifestation of the ill in society that we left unchecked.
I attended a Nigerian University in late 80s where I studied Accountancy. My encounter with the lecturer was in my 2nd year.
My classmates told me I was in big trouble as the lecturer had a reputation with female students and their perceived male friends
My Encounter:
“A beautiful lady like you needs to be taken care of” he said. By now I knew he was going to be my lecturer in a core subject.
“Sir it would have been good you took care of me. Unfortunately you are my lecturer. I wouldn’t want my success in life to be tied to anyone. People may not know it was my hard work that caused me to succeed.”
When the first term results came out, I saw I failed his subject! I knew right away that something was fishy as I could clearly remember the questions and their answers. I couldn’t understand how I could have failed that course.
I reported to those I believed would help me out. Surprisingly, they did not only fail to assist but took the stance that I was not serious in school and that’s why I was failing my core subject!
The Resolution:
I had to report to my family and we contacted the Vice Chancellor. He advised that I could request for a remark of my scripts. Almost all the people I knew in school discouraged me but I knew I had a judgment call to make.
“Osila! You’ve done it. The lecturer has resigned.” “Aah! What happened?
My script had been remarked and I got an A, the lecturer had awarded me a D.
By the way when I got my script remarked, his friend now failed me but he had to save face in the reseat! So it was a continuous struggle.
In Conclusion:
In my opinion and based on personal experiences, the issue of Sex for Marks is a mere symptom of a failing society. We need to speak the truth to ourselves. It is becoming apparent that we’ve slept for too long. It may be sex today and something else tomorrow. What exactly is the root of these anomalies? That’s the koko.
There has been so much complacency that the stench in our institutions have reached to high heavens. We need to take a stand. You may not always win but it’s better to make a wholehearted attempt.
Could you share your thoughts on this matter with me? I would be glad to read from you.
