Nigeria; our Heritage

Everyone comes from somewhere…a home within a community within the town in the local government area of a State within the country Nigeria. That tells me that everything we do, leave undone, say or otherwise does not only affect us as individuals, but various strata up to our country level.

It is therefore very worrisome the manner in which we that ought to speak for our land rather choose to speak for ourselves. Makes me wonder why development that should go to a community is sidelined and diverted to personal benefit and why community leaders are busy negotiating away the future of the land?

Have we ever stopped to ask why the youths; our future leaders are ready and willing to die under the guise that they are showing loyalty to their “current” leaders? Ask no further…it is because they do not see a future for themselves! That in itself is a clear indication that these their “current” leaders are failing.

Nigeria needs strong institutions that can run on their own steam rather than at the whims and caprices of the persons in power. American is able to checkmate its leadership because of the institutions that have been built over the years. The Supreme Court in Kenya could nullify a Presidential election that declared the incumbent the winner, because they have a system that works.

The President of Nigeria in the thick of mischievous messages flying in the airwaves, called the leadership of the two major political parties to a meeting, which is a show of leadership. Kudos.

We need to talk to ourselves more. We need to reduce (if we cannot eliminate) the blame game and verbal attacks. We need to realise that without our land, we are nothing! We need to as a matter of urgency start paying attention to our land, institutions  and our people. We must not allow the land to cry out against us.

And hey! When next you are tempted to make a negative pronouncement against Nigeria, remember that Nigeria is you and I plus all of us. Let’s do our beat to make Nigeria a better and preferred place.

Proudly Nigerian! May God bless our motherland. See…Nigeria is rising!
