Woman in the Workplace

The role of the woman in the workplace is significant but often overlooked or underrated.

Being 1 of 2 girls in a family of 6 children and we later increased to 13 (6boys & 7girls) and coming from a place where girls are not sent to school but married off and their husband may train them if they so desire, BUT my father ignored that and ensured all his children got trained to university level; I learnt the virtue of providing equal opportunities to every child. I naturally became the first female graduate in my village and the first female chartered accountant in my local government…and various firsts thereafter.

Fair opportunity to me means recognising and accepting me for me and not allowing me to be a hinderance in the environment I find myself.

At the workplace, at least in my country Nigeria, payroll is not a function of gender but of levels and the contribution we make to the organisation’s goals. I therefore do not subscribe to creating different expectations for sexes. The organization should be and I believe are more interested in the content of our brains than our physic. Comments such as “don’t you know I am a woman”, “na woman naau” etc are simply made to patronise and diminish the value a woman brings on board rather than show appreciation for her worth.

My consistent advise to every woman and every lover of dignity in our individuality is that we pay attention to the rudiments of the work place, while not loosing sight of a woman’s other God given responsibility to society…carry a child to term, raise the child, manage your home.

Always remember that God created male and female in His image and likeness. The woman is not in competition with the man but actually in competition with herself to be all she was created to be.

    Interesting piece. Short and concise. Notably, we need to educate our people on the complimentary roles of both sexes and the essential value that we bring to societal growth when we work together.
    Research findings show for instance, that corporates where you have substantial number of women in top management/Board positions tend to do better than those with less. Thanks for your incisive article.

  • Nice article and real facts. Your experience has shown that it is possible for a woman to achieve her dreams even when society acts as a stumbling block. Also most successful women work twice as hard as the men to gain recognition and enviable positions in office

    Why substance? Because ;
    The Brains,

    Spirit, (aura),
    Beauty, to mention but a few. All these and more put together describe you.
