The Use of Isolation Centers

We appear to either not know the purpose of Isolation Centers as it relates to Covid-19 or we are just spurred for mischief!

I just watched a video where some guy is complaining that the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has refused to send a high ranking Rivers State Government official that’s showing symptoms of Covid-19 to the Isolation Center. He has refused the counsel of his colleagues on the grounds that it would stigmatize the patient. Rather he has placed him in a private ward in the women’s section.

My thoughts

1) According to the directives we’ve heard so far, people that suspect they may be infected should not go to any medical facility. They are to place a call.

2) Following from above it is wrong of that Government Official to go to the hospital and for the medical personnel of RSUTH to attend to him under such circumstances

3) It is wrong to admit a man in the women’s section of the Hospital

4) It is wrong for the CMD to endorse Isolation Centers as place of stigmatization. More wrong is the fact that this stigmatization is the creation of the State Governor.

4) Isolation Center is the place where people that have confirmed case of Covid-19 are accommodated, monitored until full recovery. In my State, Rivers State, my Governor has threatened and also carried out his threat, that anyone that disobeys his lockdown orders would be sent to Isolation Center! So for him, it’s a Punishment Center.

5) Sometimes, we say and do things without paying attention only to find out that a pimple has turned into an incurable ulcer!

Way forward

i) If indeed the CMD did as has been alleged, it means he is not competent to occupy that space. The Governor may have erred; he is not a medical personnel and just wants his instructions obeyed, but the Chief Medical Director?

ii) Let the patient self-isolate while they wait for the outcome of his test.

iii) Carry out aggressive sensitization on Covid-19. It’s not a Death Sentence but deadly if not handled properly.

Covid-19 is real. With our mutual cooperation we can stop its spread. #BeWise #TakeResponsibility
