Proper Teamwork Works
A proper teamwork works in amazing ways. Why do I qualify team with proper, you may ask…
Teamwork is distinct from team. The effort of the team determines teamwork. Team is regularly associated with the acronym Together Everyone Achieves More…a synergy where the sum of collective effort is greater than sum of individual efforts.
What then does it mean to work as a team and achieve teamwork? It means each party should understand their role and function effectively therein to achieve the common goal.
My philosophy is that before someone else does work that has been assigned to me, I must be allowed to try and fail, so if that doesn’t happen and I see my assigned work being done in the spirit of “teamwork” by someone else, it comes across as a slight on my person and friction ensues. Another team member, whose role is being usurped by another under the same spirit, would simply ignore the person and watch the process fail! Another friction ensues.
So I advocate (and it sure works) that for a team to work effectively, let each member be encouraged and allowed to bring to the table the skills and competence based on which they were engaged in the first place. Proper teamwork in addition to ensuring the set goals are met, also enables each team member derive the personal satisfaction of being a part of the success story being told.
