Fake Certificate Saga

As we know, this is not the first time we are hearing of Certificate scandal. Who procured this fake NYSC Exemption Certificate for former Finance Minister Mrs Kemi Adeosun?

It started as a rumour.

Did she set out to obtain a fake Clearance? Why? Who got it for her? From where? Why couldn’t she process her clearance herself? Who snitched on her?

I believe we need to get to the root of these fake syndicates. It’s not sufficient that she has resigned. It’s unfortunate she got caught up in this but it’s an opportunity to address the bigger and deadlier issue.

I know first hand the menance of fake merchants aka oluwole. I have worked with the Revenue Authority at the Executive level. It’s big business and they run a parallel outfit for every original. Studies have shown that for every successful crime, there are willing collaborators.

Fake drivers license! Fake Plate Numbers! Fake vehicle particulars! Fake WAEC Results! Fake this! Fake that! Oh! Toronto! 🤔🤔🤔

If we simplify our processes and procedures, be clear on the requirements and see to its enforcement; we would be good to go. Most importantly, we should be willing to prosecute offenders. As citizens, we should be interested in knowing the requirements and follow through. One of our bane, is the knack for short cuts and easy fixes! Fraud syndicates exist because there is a ready market.

As a government, we should be proactive. It’s not sufficient to punish the victim (even if we say they were willing). We should put in place structures that strengthen our institutions and protect our citizens; for our greater good.

    On point
The government should put structures in place to checkmate this “evil” under the sun.

Very true! The Government officials in most parastatals make it extremely difficult for citizens to get their required documents or certificates. In fact they ensure that getting it takes years of frustration that will make an angel result in looking for an easy way out of such bottlenecks. For instance to get a driver’s license, when you go to their offices, their officials will give you details of the price to get it done without hassles (Hassles caused by them) and discourage you from doing it the right way because it will take for ages.

The common man in Nigeria is generally dishonest in nature and that is the raw fact.
